The CrossFit MKT Intramural “Re-Open” 2020

Two CrossFit Opens this year? Isn’t two better than one?


With the changes to the CrossFit Games season, the Open will now be held every October. Lucky for us, we get to experience the Open twice in one year. We are really excited about the “Re-Open”. Every year we host the Open it gets better and better and this October will not disappoint! We like to think of the Open as a 5 week Fitness Party!



The Open is comprised of 5 workouts over 5 weeks, and it starts for us on Saturday, October 12. Each Saturday we will gather as a gym, cheer each other on, and have a friendly team competition based on participation and team spirit. The Intramural Open is MKT’s way of participating in the worldwide competition as a community. 


Intramural Open Dates

Saturdays 8:00 am – 11:00 am

October 12, October 19, October 26, November 2, and November 9.

On these 5 Saturdays, we will not have normal classes. These Saturdays will be reserved for athletes that register for the Intramural Open.


Intramural Open Teams

All MKT members who register for the MKT Intramural Open will be entered into the Draft.

On September 27th, The MKT Coaches will draft the registered members on to 1 of 3 teams. Coach Corey will lead the Red Team, Coach Bobby will Lead the Blue Team, and Coach John will lead the White Team. 

Teams will be posted on Saturday morning, September 28th.

Each coach will start a private facebook group for their team where members can communicate and collaborate on weekly themes and participation.


Registration Deadline – September 26th.

Members must register for the Intramural Open by Thursday, September 26th. To register for the Intramural Open, click one of the links below and purchase either a Tank Top or a T-Shirt. The registration fee is only $40 for the 5-week event. Once you purchase either a Tank or a T-Shirt, your name will be entered into the draft. You may also purchase your Shirt or Tank through the Push Press members portal App. Select from the main menu “Pre-Orders” and then choose a Tank or a T-Shirt.

The shown color is white but each member will receive either a Red, White, or Blue Tank or T-Shirt depending on which team they get drafted to.

There is a fun and friendly competition between teams. The scoring is broken down as follows:

2 Points – Per person that Registers for the MKT Intramural Open

5 Points – Per person that registers for the CrossFit Open on

5 Points – Per person that takes the CrossFit Judges Course. (If you already took it this year you will automatically get the 5 points)

3 Points – Per Completing AND Logging Workouts in SugarWOD each week. There are 5!

2 Points – For each Top 3 finisher. 3 in the Rx Division and 3 in the Scaled Division for men and women.

5 points – Top Team Spirit. Each Saturday the coaches will award 5 extra points to the team that brings the most team spirit.  



Each week there will be a costume/dress theme that your team can participate in to potentially win the spirit points for that week.

Week 2 – Team Spirit – Team Shirts

Week 3 – Halloween – Team Dress Up

Week 4 – Hippies. Headbands and Tie Dye

Week 5 – MKT Pride


What to Expect on Saturdays

The Open is a Fitness Party! We fully expect everyone to come in with an open mind and ready to have some fun. Saturday festivities will kick off at 8:00 am. Each athlete will signup for their heat in advance. Heats will be on the gym schedule and athletes may reserve their heat 24 hours in advance. You will reserve your heat the same way you reserve your regular classes, through the Push Press members portal app.

The heat schedule will be made on Thursday nights after the workouts are released from Be ready to be flexible and go with the flow. Coaches will be present and ready to help.

Athletes will be responsible for finding a friend to count their reps.

Athletes are encouraged to start warming up 45 minutes prior to the start of their heat. The workout warm-up will be posted to SugarWOD and written on the whiteboard. The warm-up will NOT be coach led. Coaches will be around and ready to help so if you need or want help with the warm-up, just ask.

Everyone is encouraged (not required) to be here for each heat. The more people we have cheering each other on the more fun the day will be!


What to Expect During the Week at MKT

Monday – Wednesday

During the week we will have regular classes on Monday’s, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. On these days we encourage everyone to train hard and smart. If you want to do your best on Saturday, consider training during the week with 70-80% intensity and with the intent of moving well and feeling good.


On Thursdays, we are bringing back GOAT days. Goat days are programmed to work on our weaknesses. Every year in the open we see advanced movements like; double-unders, chest to bar pull-ups, muscle-ups, handstand push-ups, and toes to bar. Goat days are perfect for working on these movements with the assistance of a coach. Goat days will be designed so you can choose the movements you want to work on.


The Open workout of the week will still be programed on Fridays. Not everyone will be able to attend each Saturday so this will give everyone in the gym multiple opportunities to attack the workout. Each class will run as normal on Fridays. For those participating on Saturday, Friday could serve as a walkthrough or practice workout at a lower intensity.  An ideal training week for those who want to maximize their performance on Saturday could look like this:

Monday – Train 90% intensity

Tuesday – Train 80% intensity

Wednesday – Train 70% intensity

Thursday – Goat Day or rest

Friday – Open workout walkthrough or practice at 60% intensity or rest

Saturday – Open workout 100% intensity


Final Notes

Remember, the Open is for everyone! With Rx’d and scaled options for 19 different divisions, everyone—newbies, casual CrossFit athletes and the elite—can complete some version of the workout. In past years, we’ve seen masters competitors (35-60+) achieve feats they never thought possible, we’ve seen new athletes find new levels of personal success, and we’ve seen the emergence of rising CrossFit Games stars who inspire the world by showing what’s possible. Throughout the competition, victories great and small are all celebrated equally. Do it for fun and in the spirit of community!
